Why It Smells Like Plastic

First-Time Use: When you unbox and use a brand-new air fryer for the first time, it is common to notice a strange chemical or plastic smell.

No Need to Return It: This is a standard temporary issue caused by protective factory coatings heating up, and you do not need to pack up or return the appliance.

Step 1: Thorough Initial Wash

Disassemble the Parts: Take out all the removable pieces of your air fryer drawer. For a standard basket-style air fryer, separate the inner crisping basket or tray from the main outer drawer.

Scrub with Dish Soap: Apply plenty of regular liquid dishwashing soap onto a soft sponge. Thoroughly wash all sides of the inner and outer baskets including the bottom, interior walls, and exterior surfaces.

Rinse and Dry: Rinse all pieces completely under clean water and dry them off fully with a clean cloth towel before assembling them back into the machine.

Step 2: The Empty Burn Cycle

Set to Maximum Heat: Slide the clean, empty basket assembly back into the air fryer. Do not put any food or oil inside it.

Time and Temperature: Set the air fryer to its highest possible heat setting (typically 400°F / approx. 200°C) and adjust the timer to run for one full hour (60 minutes).

Ventilation Tip: Because this burn-off cycle will release the chemical odor quite strongly as it vaporizes the factory residues, you can place and plug the air fryer outside on a patio or inside an open garage to avoid smelling it indoors.

What if the Smell Persists?

Repeat the Process: After the 60-minute cycle finishes, let the machine cool down. Test it out with food.

If you can still detect a hint of plastic or chemical odor, simply repeat the exact process wash the baskets with soapy water once more and run another empty high-heat cycle until the factory scent dissipates permanently.
