How to Preheat an Air Fryer

How to Preheat an Air Fryer - Featured image

One of the most common questions air fryer users ask is whether preheating is actually necessary. Some recipes insist on it, while others skip the step completely. To better understand the difference, two identical air fryers were tested side by side one preheated and one started cold using both frozen food and raw chicken breasts.

The results were surprisingly simple.

Testing Frozen Food: Tater Tots

Frozen foods are one of the most popular things people cook in an air fryer, making them perfect for this comparison.

Cold Air Fryer (No Preheat)

Frozen tater tots were placed directly into a completely cold air fryer basket in a single layer.

They cooked at:
400°F (200°C)

The basket was shaken halfway through cooking to help them crisp evenly.

Result

The tater tots turned out hot, crispy, and evenly cooked. The texture and flavor were excellent, with a golden exterior and soft interior.

Preheated Air Fryer

The second batch was cooked in an air fryer that had already been preheated to:
400°F (200°C)

The tots were cooked the same way and shaken halfway through.

Result

The preheated batch finished only slightly hotter internally. The crispiness, color, and taste were almost identical to the cold-start version.

Verdict for Frozen Foods

For frozen foods like fries, nuggets, tater tots, and frozen snacks, preheating is usually unnecessary. Skipping preheating saves time and produces nearly identical results.

Testing Raw Chicken Breasts

Raw meat behaves differently because it takes longer to cook and benefits more from immediate heat exposure.

Cold Air Fryer (No Preheat)

A raw chicken breast was placed into a cold basket and cooked at:
380°F (193°C)

The chicken was flipped halfway through cooking.

Because the air fryer started cold, the chicken required additional cooking time before reaching a safe internal temperature of:
165°F (74°C)

Result

The chicken still developed great browning and remained juicy with excellent flavor.

Preheated Air Fryer

The second chicken breast was added after preheating the air fryer to:
380°F (193°C)

It followed the same cooking process and was flipped halfway through.

Result

The preheated air fryer cooked the chicken slightly faster while producing nearly identical texture, moisture, and browning.

When Should You Preheat an Air Fryer?

Preheating is most helpful for:

Steaks

Raw chicken breasts

Delicate proteins

Foods that benefit from immediate searing

Recipes requiring very crispy exteriors

When Can You Skip Preheating?

You can usually skip preheating for:

Frozen foods

Leftovers

Fries

Chicken nuggets

Tater tots

Quick snacks

Final Thoughts

For most everyday meals, preheating an air fryer is completely optional. While it can reduce cooking time slightly for raw meats, it makes very little difference for frozen foods and snacks. Even if you forget to preheat, your food can still turn out crispy, flavorful, and fully cooked.
